Eye creams typically target dark circles, puffiness, and crow’s feet, but the thin, crepey skin on upper eyelids often goes overlooked. Alastin aims to address this with its updated Restorative Eye Complex with TriHex+ ($128), focusing on what skincare can achieve for this delicate area.

Why Upper Eyelids Require Special Care

The skin on the upper eyelids is among the thinnest on the face and undergoes constant movement from blinking, squinting, and facial expressions. Over time, this leads to reduced firmness and increased crepiness. Alan Widgerow, MD, chief scientific officer at Galderma, Alastin’s parent company, notes that any formula for this area must be both effective and gentle, addressing crepiness without irritating the eyes.

Research on upper-eyelid concerns has lagged behind studies on crow’s feet and under-eye areas, which are easier to measure. Issues like fine wrinkling and excess skin on the upper lids require more specific evaluation methods, making targeted solutions harder to develop.

What Sets Alastin’s Formula Apart

Alastin’s updated eye cream combines its original TriHex Technology, designed to support collagen and elastin, with Octapeptide-45. The company claims this peptide helps the skin produce its own hyaluronic acid. The formula also includes ingredients aimed at improving firmness around the eyes.

A 12-week clinical study involving 29 adults aged 35 to 70 with moderate to severe eye-area aging showed promising results. Investigator assessments reported a 22% reduction in upper-eyelid fine lines, a 34% improvement in under-eye puffiness, and a 30% improvement in crow’s feet. While the study was small, the findings on upper-eyelid crepiness are notable given the lack of research in this area.

Eye Cream vs. Surgical Solutions

Brian Biesman, MD, a Nashville-based oculofacial plastic surgeon, distinguishes between improving skin quality and addressing underlying anatomical issues. Topical products like Alastin can enhance skin quality, reduce fine wrinkles, and minimize discoloration. However, surgery is necessary for concerns like excess skin, drooping eyelids, or bulging fat pads.

The Role of Skincare in Eyelid Rejuvenation

Skincare products can complement surgical procedures for patients considering eyelid surgery. Alastin’s eye cream is positioned as a supportive treatment, enhancing skin quality before and after surgery. This approach addresses skin concerns while leaving anatomical issues to surgical intervention.
