If you or someone you love is on a GLP-1, you’ve likely noticed hair changes alongside other effects. Hairstylists are reporting more clients experiencing long-term impacts on their hair.

According to Gallup, 11% of Americans are currently on GLP-1 medications, up from 3% two years ago.

Stylists Speak Out

Kadi Lee, a celebrity hair colorist and cofounder of Highbrow Hippie, says, “I’m hearing about it constantly right now. It’s such a new topic and we’re still early on the long-term data, but it’s hard to ignore what I’m seeing in the chair, and the concern being raised by my clients.” Lee emphasizes that while the topic is relatively new, the concerns and visible effects are undeniable.

Paul Labrecque, a master colorist and stylist at Paul Labrecque Salon and Skincare Spa, notes that significant weight loss, whether from bariatric surgery or GLP-1s, often leads to hair loss. He explains that when that happens, hair goes into what he calls a shock phase, and it thins, fast.

Shawn Butner, a master colorist at Anushka Spa and Salon, observes changes in hair density and quality, often before clients mention anything. “It’s not the same as before they went on the drug,” he notes, highlighting the noticeable differences in hair texture and volume.

A Delayed Reaction

GLP-1 medications can cause nutrient gaps due to appetite shifts, which directly impact hair health. Lee explains, “Hair operates on a delay, so changes happening now reflect what was happening in the body a few months ago.” This delay also applies to recovery, as improvements take time to manifest.

This phenomenon is known as telogen effluvium, where rapid weight loss pushes hair into a resting phase, leading to shedding. Certified trichologist Emily DeNard, founder of Emunah Beauty, explains that the hair must complete the shedding process before the follicle can cycle back into the growth phase.

If nutrient deficiencies persist, regrowth may be slower, and hair may come in finer and drier. However, Labrecque offers a more optimistic view, stating that once weight stabilizes and a well-rounded diet is resumed, hair fallout typically stops, and hair grows back.

The scalp often shows signs of distress first, with dryness, tightness, and irritation being common indicators. Lee notes, “When nutrient intake drops, the scalp loses blood flow and moisture and feels tight, flaky or irritated.”

Stylists recommend a gentle approach during this period, focusing on cleanliness, hydration, and avoiding excessive products or processing. Lee’s rule is simple: “Clean, hydrated, calm, and no extra product or processing.”

To support hair health, stylists suggest protein supplements, healthy fats, and vitamins A, C, D, and E. Butner recommends a full-spectrum protein supplement, not just collagen, to ensure full nutritional support.

They also emphasize the importance of heat protectants and weekly deep conditioning to minimize damage. Lee advises, “When the hair is damaged, it needs more TLC, not more processing or heavy heat-styling.”

While telogen effluvium is typically temporary, resolving within nine months, persistent shedding may indicate an underlying issue. DeNard stresses the importance of evaluating all possible contributing factors if shedding continues beyond this timeframe.

In the meantime, temporary fixes like hair toppers or fibers can help mask hair loss without causing additional stress. Labrecque recommends toppers that attach with a flexible headband to avoid tension on fragile strands.

Ultimately, patience is key, as regrowth can take two to three months to become noticeable. Lee advises, “Be gentle with yourself. This is a temporary response to a big change, not a permanent one.”
