Nutrafol has introduced its first hair serum focused on improving the strength of individual strands, tackling a frequent obstacle in hair growth: breakage. The product, named Strand Serum and priced at $54 for a 90-day supply, targets the loss of new hair before it reaches full visibility, an issue the company describes as “the missing step between growth and length.”

Individuals experiencing hair thinning often find that new growth breaks off before becoming noticeable, which can make progress appear stagnant. Heather Woolery-Lloyd, Nutrafol’s chief medical advisor and a dermatologist, explains that styling routines, chemical treatments, and daily handling contribute to weakened hair, raising the likelihood of breakage. The serum is formulated to counteract this damage.

Clinical evaluations demonstrate significant improvements. After five uses on damp and dry hair, breakage was reduced by up to 83% compared with a non-conditioning shampoo. When used alongside Nutrafol’s shampoo and conditioner, hair strength increased sixfold relative to a non-conditioning shampoo alone. Testers also saw 62% fewer split ends and 85% less frizz for up to 72 hours. The formula remains effective under heat up to 450°F, making it appropriate for styling.

The serum’s DualFusion Complex operates through two phases: a water phase fortifies the hair’s cortex, while an oil phase seals the cuticle. Key components include milk thistle seed extract, which strengthens the cortex, wild olive extract to soften hair and visibly seal split ends, and hemisqualane, a sugarcane-derived silicone alternative, that helps defend against breakage. Rosehip fruit extract completes the formulation.

Development involved assessing 36 ingredient candidates across 54 formula versions, supported by 18 preclinical studies and consumer testing encompassing hair types 1A through 4C, including color-treated, chemically treated, and chemically straightened hair. The final product is vegan, NSF Certified for Sport, and free from parabens, phthalates, silicones, sulfates, and synthetic fragrances.

The Strand Serum is now available through Nutrafol’s official website, Amazon, and its network of haircare and healthcare professionals. Early access for subscribers began on September 30 via the myNutrafol app. A bundled Strand Serum + Brush Kit, priced at $54, is exclusively sold at Ulta Beauty.
